About Our Youth Programs
Youth engagement has been part of LVEJO’s work since its founding in 1994. Young people in Little Village face elevated rates of asthma, pollution, and limited access to green space. LVEJO’s youth organizing program is grounded in the belief that young people are not only those most impacted by environmental harm but also the ones who already carry the solutions. Our role is to support and guide youth through coaching, skills sharing, and creating space for young people to organize themselves.
Programs
Summer Organizing Leadership Program
LVEJO’s Summer Organizing Leadership Program invests in young community leaders ages 16 to 24 who learn to identify pollution and its sources, understand the history and policy decisions that shaped Little Village’s industrial environment, and act on local and state issues that affect them every day.
The program offers a paid summer cohort where youth co-lead campaigns around air quality, flooding prevention, and transportation equity. Participants receive a stipend, one-on-one mentorship, and hands-on organizing experience including direct action and campaign planning alongside LVEJO staff and community members.

Youth Alumni Council
LVEJO’s Youth Alumni Council is a leadership body of former program participants who remain actively engaged in LVEJO’s campaigns. Alumni mentor current youth leaders, support ongoing campaign work, and help orient young adults in Little Village who are impacted by environmental harm and want to get involved.

Our Impact
Youth leaders’ truck counting and data collection work provided early evidence for air quality campaigns in Little Village. Youth design input shaped La Villita Park’s basketball courts, splash pad, skate park, and recreation area.
Since 2022, more than 32 youth leaders have completed cycles of the program. Former youth leaders have transitioned into full-time roles at LVEJO and have led campaigns in transportation, food justice, and air monitoring.
