Position Title: Community Organizer, PDF

Little Village Environmental Justice Organization is an established community organization in the heart of the Little Village community of Chicago. LVEJO works on grassroots campaigns that focus on Climate Adaptation, Industrial Legacies, and Community Resiliency. LVEJO has been internationally recognized for its organizing successes.
We are seeking a highly motivated organizer to lead community outreach efforts in Little Village. The position provides opportunities to work with diverse communities and many Chicago institutions. The Community Organizer reports to the Organizing and Strategy Director and Executive Director.

Summary of Duties:

  • Implement, manage, and document sustainable grassroots campaigns that will engage youth, adults, and elders in Little Village.
  • Contribute to developing grassroots strategies that advance LVEJO’s campaigns.
  • Promote environmental justice principles that enhance the ability to create social change in Chicago.
  • Support LVEJO’s youth leadership development program and the training of high school and college students.
  • Perform strategic research on matters related to urban communities of color.
  • Organize community meetings related to social and environmental justice in Chicago.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma preferred but not required
  • Bilingual Spanish/English: able to write/speak in both languages
  • Community organizing, volunteer management and leadership development experience
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including public speaking before large audiences and one-on-one mentoring
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities with consistent follow-through
  • Independent and self-motivated, also able to work in teams
  • Comfortable working in diverse settings and facilitating culturally relevant programming
  • Knowledge of the greater Chicago neighborhoods, urban issues, and political advocacy
  • Social media, database, website management, and Microsoft Office skills
